The European deputies of the right-wing parties, who support Brexit, as well as the independence of Catalonia, obstructed today's formal opening of the session of the European Parliament.
Some did not want to stand for the EU anthem, Beethoven's "Ode to Joy", while others, mostly from the ranks of Nigel Farage's Brexit party, turned their backs during the opening ceremony, the AP agency reported.
Farage warned Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt in front of the Parliament in Strasbourg. "If you don't deliver Brexit (by October 31), they are done," Farage told reporters.
Long-time member of the European Parliament from the Labor Party, Ričar Corbet, assessed that the "Brexiters" think they are smart because they turned their backs, but that the move actually looks "pathetic and didn't impress anyone", reports RTS.
There were also protests over the decision not to allow Carles Puigdamon and two other Catalan separatists to take their seats in parliament. MPs from his group held their photos and defended their right to take their seats.
At the same time, a protest was held in front of the Parliament building in Strasbourg.
Some MPs also protested the case of the German ship captain Karola Raketa, who was detained in Italy due to a dispute regarding migrant rights.
After that, the session continued as usual, reports AP.
