British finance minister Philip Hammond, who opposes Brexit without an agreement with Brussels, said today that he will resign if Boris Johnson becomes prime minister.
"Assuming Boris Johnson becomes the next prime minister, I believe his terms in government would include accepting a no-deal exit (from the European Union) on October 31," Hammond said.
On Tuesday, the name of the new prime minister, voted on by 160.000 members of the ruling Conservative Party, will be announced.
In addition to Johnson, the head of diplomacy, Jeremy Hunt, is fighting for the new prime minister.
Johnson, who was the foreign minister and mayor of London, is considered the favorite.
The new prime minister should officially take office on Wednesday.
Hammond said that the finance minister should have very similar views with the prime minister, adding that if Johnson becomes prime minister, he will not wait to be replaced, but will resign before that.
