More than 20 people were injured today in a strong earthquake in western Turkey that caused damage to houses.

The epicenter of the earthquake, whose magnitude was estimated at 6,0, was in the town of Bozkurt, in the province of Denizli, the Turkish Emergency Situations Agency announced.

Istanbul's Kandili Seismology Center said the earthquake was less powerful and estimated the magnitude at 5,7.

The Agency for Emergency Situations stated that 23 people requested medical assistance, some of whom were hospitalized.

The mayor of Bozkurt, Birsen Čelik, said that two houses collapsed in the earthquake and that the residents managed to escape with minor injuries.

Several more houses were damaged, their walls cracked.

Locals ran into the streets in a panic, Čelik said, adding that the authorities are urging them not to return to the damaged houses.

Numerous houses were also damaged in the nearby town of Tutluča, where no one was injured, said Mayor Hudaj Karasahin.

The earthquake was also felt in the neighboring provinces of Antalya, Mugla, Isparta and Burdur, where people also fled their homes.

Turkey's soil is prone to earthquakes.

More than 7,4 people died in the 1999 magnitude earthquake that struck northwestern Turkey in 17.000.
