Several bears dug up a number of grave sites at a cemetery in Kamchatka in the far east of Russia, apparently in search of food, reports the Interfax agency.

"Usually at this time bears hunt fish, but this year there is none in the nearby river," said a local official.

"People leave food at grave sites to honor the deceased," the official added. "Allegedly, the smell of food in the cemetery attracted the animals."

Seven graves were dug up to the coffins, and the crosses were broken, in the cemetery of the city of Jelizova, the report states.

One of the bears, which is believed to have been among the "vandals", was caught and killed, reports Hina.
