Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of a possible scenario if Ukrainian troops take control of the border with the rebels.
"If Ukrainian troops take control of the border between Russia and the eastern part of the country held by Ukrainian rebels, there may be a massacre similar to the one in Srebrenica that happened during the conflict in the Balkans," Putin said, reports Rasha Today.
The Russian president's warning came a day after his first meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris.
Reconciliation between the Ukrainian government and the forces of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk republics, which border Russia, was high on the agenda.
The peace plan under the Minsk agreements includes constitutional reform, amnesty for rebels and the election of deputies to the Ukrainian parliament to represent the residents of the breakaway regions.
The final step would be for Ukrainian troops to take control of the border.
Kyiv agreed to this plan, but pointed out that the border must be taken over first.
