Breton after the victory of the conservatives and Johnson: Brussels wants to restore relations with London

The new European commissioner for the single market, Thierry Breton, said today that Brussels wants to "restore" relations with London, especially in trade, after Boris Johnson's victory in the extraordinary parliamentary elections in Great Britain that should lead to Brexit at the end of January.

"Now we need to rebuild relations with Great Britain, which is an important partner," Breton said in Brussels, expressing his desire for trade relations with London to be balanced.

Breton expects the European Council to renew the mandate of negotiator Michel Barnier, who has already negotiated the Brexit agreement with London, at a meeting in Brussels today.

"Trade relations should be continued. Great Britain is a very important partner for the EU and we are the country's first trading partner," Breton added.

Prime Minister Johnson's Conservative Party won the majority in the elections, paving the way for Great Britain to leave the EU on January 31.
