A man was arrested today in Moscow after stabbing two people in an Orthodox church, the authorities announced, rejecting the terrorist motive for the attack.
The police arrested a 26-year-old man from the Lipetsk region, south of Moscow, Russian news agencies reported.
An investigation has been opened into "hooliganism" and "violence", the state news agency TASS reported.
According to the TV channel Ren-TV, the attacker broke into the church during the service, and the faithful overpowered him while waiting for the police to arrive.
Russia has seen street knife attacks in recent years, which some claim is the responsibility of the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group, but authorities have not officially launched an anti-terror investigation.
