Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today that he asked his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to step down in Syria and let Turkey deal with Syrian government forces on its own.
He said that after his announcement that he would open the borders to Europe, 18 thousand migrants crossed the border with Greece and that number will increase.
"We will not close the door to refugees. The European Union must fulfill its promises," Erdogan said in Istanbul.
According to AP, Greece sees Erdogan's decision to open the borders after the death of 33 soldiers in Syria as a deliberate attempt to put pressure on European countries.
On the border between Turkey and Greece, for the second day in a row, Greek police officers used tear gas against migrants who threw stones at them.
Greek authorities are trying to prevent the entry of migrants who rushed to the border after Erdogan's announcement that he would open their way to the EU.
In a 2016 deal with the European Union, Turkey agreed to stem the flow of migrants to Europe in exchange for financial aid.
