A young man from Germany who threatened Muslims with murder on the Internet will now face an investigation for that action, the German prosecutor's office confirmed on Monday.
The 21-year-old man was allegedly inspired by the crime committed by the attacker at the mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 51 people, the prosecutor's office in Cele in Lower Saxony explained.
During the search of the suspect's apartment, the police found weapons and documents with extremist content on his account.
As stated in the prosecutor's statement, the suspect posted the threat on the Internet on May 29, but it is assumed that he had been planning the attack for a long time in which he would cause a large number of victims with the aim of attracting media attention.
The 21-year-old was detained a day after a court issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of violating the law by threatening to commit a crime, acquiring weapons and financing terrorism.
The police's counter-terrorism unit has taken over the investigation into the case.
