At least 75 people have been arrested and assets worth 169 million euros have been seized in a major operation against the mafia in Italy and Switzerland, the Italian Financial Police (GDF) announced today.
"Seventy-five people were simultaneously arrested in Italy and Switzerland for serious crimes, including mafia association, association for international drug trafficking, money laundering, corruption... possession and smuggling of weapons," the statement specifies, adding that in that more than 700 police officers participated in the operation in Italy.
According to the Swiss prosecutor's office, searches were carried out in several cantons, and weapons and ammunition were seized.
The Italian police adds that the operation was aimed at members of the 'Ndrangheta, a mafia in Calabria, that the investigation included 158 people and that property worth 169 million euros was seized.
