The number of migrants who arrived in Spain via the Mediterranean Sea exceeded the number of migrants who arrived in Italy since the beginning of the year, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced today. The number of migrants arriving in Europe via the Mediterranean Sea has exceeded 50.000, which is almost twice as low as compared to last year in the same period, according to the announcement.
According to IOM data, 1.443 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean since January 2018. "As we predicted, Spain has become the most active route for African migrants and people who want to reach Europe via Africa," said IOM spokesperson Joel Milman added that during the weekend, Spain exceeded Italy in the number of migrants admitted. A total of 18.016 migrants arrived in Spain, while last year there were 6.500 in the same period. 17.827 migrants came to Italy since January, while there were 93.237 in the same period last year, but with the agreement with the Libyan coast guard in mid-July 2017, the arrivals in Itai decreased significantly.
