Romanian President Klaus Iohannis today asked Prime Minister Viorica Dancila to resign because of the political struggle over the eventual relocation of the Romanian embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
"Dančila is not up to the task as Prime Minister of Romania, and because of this the government is becoming a source of weakness for Romania. That is why I am publicly asking Dančila to resign," said Iohannis in an address to the media this morning.
The prime minister, a social democrat, "categorically" refused the right-wing president's request, saying she had "no reason" to leave office.
According to her, the head of state "risks weakening the international position of Romania".
Iohannis, whose relations with the Social Democratic government are not very good, referred to a document that the government adopted last Sunday in the utmost secrecy, in which the relocation of the Romanian embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is considered. The USA announced the relocation of the embassy in May.
Assessing that moving the embassy would be against international law, Iohannis expressed his opposition and regret because he was not informed before making such a decision, which he called "a big mistake".
"Dancila prefers to follow the orders of the party," said Iohannis.
Opponents consider the Romanian Prime Minister a "puppet" of party leader Livia Dragnea.
