The jihadist group of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb - Akmi (Aqmi) today called on its supporters to kill all people who insult the Muslim prophet Muhammad and threatened to take revenge on French President Emmanuel Macron who defended the right to cartoons.
"Killing one who insults the prophet is the right of every Muslim who is able to apply it," the group said.
Acmi reacted to Macron's statement during the delivery of mail to the history teacher Samuel Pati, who was killed by an Islamist because he showed his students caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in a class on freedom of expression.
Macron then said that France would not give up cartoons in the name of freedom of expression. His statement caused a wave of criticism, protests and boycotts of French products in the Muslim world.
Several tens of thousands of people have participated in protests against France in Muslim countries in recent days. Demonstrators burned the French flag and portraits of Macron.
"A boycott is one task, but it is not enough," added Akmi and called for "revenge" while calling the Islamist who beheaded Pati a martyr. The Islamist was then killed by the police.
"We do not forget your terrible actions," the group added, referring to the French president.
