The marble head of the Greek god Hermes from the third century BC was discovered in Athens during work to improve the sewage system, the Greek Ministry of Culture said.

The marble work was found on Friday, just 1,3 meters below the pavement of a busy street in central Athens.

"The work dates from the end of the 4th century BC or the beginning of the 3rd century BC and is in good condition," the statement said, adding that it is the god Hermes in a mature age.

Hermes is the son of Zeus, and in Greek mythology he is the messenger of the gods and the protector of travelers.

The marble work was transferred to the Department of Antiquities Administration.
