Today, British Prime Minister Theresa May discussed the resolution of the border issue with Ireland with ministers at a regular government session, assuring that she will not accept an agreement on future relations with Brussels after Brexit "at any cost". However, the Prime Minister said that she is convinced of reaching an agreement in the interests of all, in the hope that the best possible agreement will be reached, but not at any cost, said an unnamed government spokesman. European Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, who is visiting Slovakia, said today that no agreement has yet been reached, adding that the issue of the border with Ireland is still a stumbling block in the negotiations. The prime ministers of Ireland and Great Britain discussed yesterday the possibility of revising the "safety net" mechanism (Backstop) to prevent the return of the border between Ireland and the British province of Northern Ireland after Brexit. The mechanism would include Northern Ireland remaining in the customs union and single market, unless another solution is found. London opposes it in principle because it could threaten the territorial integrity of Great Britain. Great Britain officially leaves the European Union on March 29, 2019.
