The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, assessed today in Moscow that the appointments in the new American administration indicate that Washington intends to continue the "line of dominance" on the international level.
"The containment of both China and Russia will certainly figure in (US) foreign policy. They are already considering how to make Russia and China not unite so much that they feel more powerful than America itself," Lavrov said at a regular annual press conference.
He assessed that the presence of people in the administration of US President Joseph Biden, with whom Moscow had already had a dialogue, would enable them to quickly start joint work.
"This gives us the opportunity to roughly present what line will be implemented by the old and new members of the foreign policy sector in the US administration," Lavrov said.
Lavrov also assessed that the manners of the new American administration could become more appropriate, but that the essence of Washington's policy will not change.
"Where it benefits the Americans, where they understand that they can't do anything without us, without China, they will be forced to come to an agreement," Lavrov said, adding that it could be the fight against infections, climate change, and the fight against terrorism.
As a priority for cooperation with Washington, Lavrov mentioned the area of arms control.
