The European Parliament did not vote to ban phosphates used in the preparation of meat for kebabs and gyros, because the majority of MPs voted against it, which means that kebabs and gyros will continue to be sold, reports Tanjug.

The European Parliament's Committee for the Environment, Public Health and Safety announced on Twitter that three votes were missing for the adoption of the decision to ban the addition of phosphates to kebabs.

The vote was held on the basis of a proposal to ban the addition of phosphates to frozen kebab meat, Croatian portal Indeks reports.

According to reports, phosphate is used in deep-frozen meat skewers for kebabs and gyros because it ensures better cohesion of the various meat components on the skewer and because without phosphate the meat would dry out, and the ban on phosphate would endanger the industry, which employs around 200.000 workers in Europe.

Out of 373 deputies, 272 voted against, while 30 abstained.
