At least four people died today and 23 were injured in a fire in a multi-storey apartment building in the western German city of Saarbrücken, authorities said.
One person who jumped from the roof of the burning building was seriously injured, and the building is inhabited mostly by social assistance beneficiaries, the dpa agency reported.
The German newspaper "Bild" reported that more than 100 firefighters and 25 policemen were trying to save the residents.
The fire apparently started on the first or second floor of the building and quickly spread to the upper floors.
The police state that the cause is currently unknown.
