A major international action against members of the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta mafia was launched on the territory of Italy, Germany, Spain and Romania.
The target of the operation called "Platinum-DIA" against the Ndrangheta, launched this morning by the Italian Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate (DIA), are two mafia clans – the Agresta and Đorđi families.
The Đorđi family is accused of international human trafficking and drug trafficking in several regions in Italy and Germany.
More than 200 members of the DIA, around 100 policemen and gendarmes, as well as an army regiment, were mobilized on the territory of Italy. About 500 agents were mobilized in other countries, Italian investigators said.
Three arrest warrants were issued in Germany, 30 in Italy, and 80 homes were searched by the police in both countries.
Ndrangheta, whose name means "heroism" or "male virtue" in Greek, is estimated to have surpassed the infamous Sicilian Cosa Nostra in power due to cocaine smuggling from Latin America.
