Milan's central office for emergency situations stated that firefighters were called to the scene around 1:XNUMX local time. It took them almost three hours to extinguish the fire, reports NXNUMX.
In the videos that appeared on social networks, thick smoke could be seen billowing from the building where about seventy families, or hundreds of people, live, according to the Italian media.
Hundreds of people were present on the street in front of the building, and numerous ambulances were also nearby.
"We smelled smoke and immediately ran away. I didn't think it was that serious," one of the tenants told Ansa. She escaped from the 15th floor, where the fire started.
The mayor of Milan, Bepe Sala, said that for now there are no reports of casualties or injuries.
"About twenty people got out without any problems. Now the firefighters are entering the apartments, breaking down the doors to see if anyone is still inside. "We are satisfied with the fact that there was enough time to go outside, but until we check everything, we cannot be sure," said Sala.
A large cloud of black smoke was visible from several kilometers away, reports N1.
The 60-meter-tall building was designed to look like the hull of a ship and had an aluminum sail on the roof, which burned and fell to the street in parts.
