A referendum on same-sex marriage will be held in Switzerland tomorrow.
Switzerland approved same-sex civil partnerships in 2007, AP writes.
The government, which supported the "Marriage for All" referendum, said the decision would put same-sex partners on an equal footing with heterosexual couples by allowing them to jointly adopt children and sponsor spouses for citizenship.
Polls suggest that the referendum will pass with around 60 percent support.
Switzerland, which has a population of 8,5 million, is traditionally conservative, and in that country women only got the right to vote in 1990.
Greece, Italy, the countries of Andorra, Monaco and San Marino also do not extend marriage rights to lesbians and homosexuals.
Unlike many other European countries, where elected representatives have legalized same-sex marriage, in Switzerland voters decide on it because opponents of this idea have collected enough signatures for a public referendum on the issue.
