Hundreds of people in Spain's Canary Islands fear for their homes and property after a new river of lava from a volcano put another settlement on the island of La Palma at risk today.
Island authorities ordered the evacuation of about 800 people from the coastal town of Los Llanos de Aridana on Tuesday after lava changed course on its way to the Atlantic Ocean.
It is the first mass evacuation since September 19, when more than 6.000 people were evacuated immediately after the eruption of the Cumbra Vijeha volcano.
Volcanologists said that a new lava flow had separated from the main one and was heading towards a populated area outside the one that had been evacuated earlier.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez traveled to the island today, which is his fourth visit since the first eruption.
"Unfortunately, the news we have from the scientific board is that the activity of the volcano is not decreasing, so it cannot be expected in the coming days either," Sanchez said.
The Sanchez government has pledged 214 million euros in aid to rebuild homes, farms and businesses in the affected area.
