Unvaccinated people in Austria could face new restrictions if the number of people infected with the coronavirus continues to rise, Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said.
If the number of covid patients in intensive care reaches 500, or 25 percent of the country's total capacity, entry into restaurants and hotels will only be allowed to those who have been vaccinated or recovered from covid, said Schallenberg last night after a meeting with state officials at which the response to the rapid increase was discussed. infections.
Now 220 patients are in intensive care and if there are 600 patients, or one third of the total capacity, the government plans to introduce restrictions for unvaccinated people.
In this case, they would only be allowed to leave their homes for special reasons.
"The pandemic is not behind us yet. "We will soon fall into a pandemic of the unvaccinated," he said.
Austria reported 20.408 new cases of the virus last Sunday, according to health authorities, bringing the seven-day average to 228,5 per 100.000 residents.
A week earlier, there were 152,5 infected per 100.000 inhabitants.
Although the Austrian government has been encouraging citizens to get vaccinated, efforts have slowed in recent months. About 65,4 percent of citizens received one dose of the vaccine, and 62,2 percent were fully vaccinated.
