European Union (EU) foreign affairs ministers will expand sanctions on Belarus tomorrow to include airlines and travel agencies believed to be involved in the transport of migrants to the Union's borders, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borelj announced.

The EU has accused Belarus of encouraging migrants to come to its territory in large numbers and cross over to Poland and other neighboring EU countries, in response to sanctions previously imposed on Minsk, reports Reuters.

EU foreign ministers are supposed to meet tomorrow.

"We will give the green light to extend the sanctions against Belarus so that they can be applied against all those who participate in the smuggling of migrants to that country," Borelj told the French newspaper Journal de Dimanche.

He added that the sanctions could also affect the heads of airline companies and travel agencies, who would be banned from traveling and have their funds frozen in the EU.

Borelj also stated that around 30 Belarusian government officials who are believed to be involved in the migrant crisis could be targeted for sanctions.
