Germany: Protests by climate activists due to the waste of usable food

German officials condemned today the protests of climate activists who blocked roads due to the waste of large amounts of usable food.

Activists from the "Uprising of the Last Generation" group have taped roads in Stuttgart, Freiburg and near the port of Hamburg to demand an end to the massive waste of usable food, which they claim contributes to hunger and climate change.

Bavaria's top state security official said that such blockades are not covered by the provision of freedom of assembly.

The conservative Christian Social Union said that massively obstructing the movement of people or blocking the movement of goods is a serious violation of the law.

Germany's Green Party supported the peaceful protests but said the blockades could undermine public support for measures to combat climate change and criticized activists for threatening to intensify protests if the government did not accede to their demands.

Germany is making no progress towards meeting its targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The blockades are reminiscent of last year's protests by the climate group "Insulate Britain", which blocked roads in Great Britain.
