The European Union has a clear and principled position when it comes to war events in the former Yugoslavia, said Ana Pisonero, spokeswoman for the European Commission.
"We have said many times that in Europe there is no place for revisionism, denial of genocide or glorification of war criminals, which is contrary to the most basic European values," Pisonero said in response to a question about the position of the Commission regarding the fact that convicted war criminals participate in the election campaign in Serbia. .
Referring to the process of presidential and parliamentary elections that will be held on Sunday, April 3, Pisonero emphasized the importance of "inclusive and credible elections" conducted within the existing legal framework in Serbia and according to international standards.
The Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) stated in a March 28 report entitled "Attitudes towards war crimes in the 2022 election campaign" that several candidates in the elections are linked to war events.
They pointed out that six convicted war criminals: Vojislav Šešelj, Vladimir Lazarević, Veselin Šljivančanin, Nikola Šainović, Dragan Vasiljković, Vinko Pandurević, supported the lists and candidates of the ruling coalition of the Serbian Progressive Party and the Socialist Party of Serbia.
A spokeswoman for the European Commission said that political leaders in the Western Balkans must lead by example, acknowledging what happened in order to honor the victims and truly promote reconciliation "by confronting the roots of hatred that led to genocide."
"That is our principled position and it is very clear," Pisonero emphasized.
