Lithuania will no longer import Russian gas to meet its domestic needs, thus becoming the first country in Europe to ensure independence from Russian supplies, the country's Ministry of Energy announced yesterday.
All natural gas for Lithuania's domestic consumption will be imported through the liquefied natural gas import terminal in the port of Klaipeda, the ministry said in a statement, Reuters reported.
"From this month onwards, no more Russian gas in Lithuania," Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda wrote on Twitter, saying the country was severing "energy ties with the aggressor".
"If we can do it, so can the rest of Europe," he added.
