Ukraine announced today that it destroyed a Russian landing ship near the small Snake Island in the Black Sea, which has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance to the Russian invasion.
The Bairaktar TB2 combat drone, developed in Turkey, "hit the landing ship 11770 Serna and two surface-to-air missile systems of the Tor type," the Ukrainian Navy announced on Facebook, without specifying a date.
Moscow did not confirm the information on its side.
In footage released by the Ukrainian military, a ship anchored near a quay can be seen hit by an explosion and then engulfed in flames as a large cloud of smoke billows out.
26 meters long, "Serna" belongs to the class of fast Russian amphibious ships with a displacement of 45 tons. It is armed with 7,62 mm machine guns and "Igla" rocket launchers. It is intended for the landing of combat vehicles, as well as assault units.
In early May, the Ukrainian military claimed to have bombed two Russian Raptor-class patrol boats near Snake Island, also hit by Bairaktar TB2 combat drones.
In mid-April, the flagship Russian ship "Moscow" sank in the Black Sea after being hit by Ukrainian missiles, according to Kiev and Washington. Moscow claimed that the sinking was the result of an explosion on that ship.
Snake Island, originally a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, is now under Russian control, and captured Ukrainian soldiers have been released in a prisoner exchange with Moscow.
It is the seventy-third day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
