At the NATO summit that started today in Madrid, Turkey will support the accession of Finland and Sweden to the Alliance, announced the office of Finnish President Sauli Ninisto, after the meeting of the delegations of the three countries.
After the meeting, the heads of delegations of the three countries signed a joint statement in the presence of Ninista, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reports RIA Novosti.
Previously, the Finnish media reported that Turkey, Sweden and Finland are preparing a joint memorandum to resolve issues that are disputed for Turkey in connection with the accession of the two Scandinavian countries to NATO.
On May 18, due to the war in Ukraine, Finland and Sweden submitted applications to the NATO Secretary General for joining the alliance.
NATO member Turkey has so far blocked their applications, saying the two countries are too soft on organizations like the Kurdistan Workers' Party, which has led a 38-year rebellion against Turkey that has left tens of thousands dead.
