The United Nations (UN) human rights office has expressed concern over plans by Russian-backed authorities to try Ukrainian prisoners of war in Mariupol, possibly within days, saying such a process could itself amount to a war crime.
"We are very concerned about the way it is done. There are pictures in the media of cages being built in the Mariupol Philharmonic, really massive cages and obviously the idea is to restrain the prisoners," said Ravina Shamdasani at the UN briefing.
"This is not acceptable, this is humiliating," she said.
Deliberately depriving a prisoner of war of the right to a fair trial is a war crime by Russia, she added.
