US President Joseph Biden's administration is unlikely to significantly change its approach to helping Ukraine fight Russia, and the White House has so far rejected some of Ukraine's requests for weapons - even as Ukrainian forces have made significant advances and retaken thousands of kilometers of territory from Russia.
How CNN writes, the US is not yet inclined to provide Ukrainian forces with long-range tactical missile systems, known as "ATACMS", which Kiev has been asking for for months.
ATACMS has a range of up to 300 kilometers, and the Biden administration still believes that securing those systems could be escalating, as they could be used to target Russia itself.
Currently, the maximum range of the weapons that the US provides to Ukraine is about 80 kilometers.
Last week, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin indicated that the US position had not changed.
"The HIMARS systems were outstanding in terms of allowing the Ukrainians to hit targets that were needed inside Ukraine," Austin said Friday in Prague, without mentioning ATACMS.
CNN adds that U.S. officials largely view Ukraine's recent momentum as meaning that the kinds of weapons and intelligence the West has been providing to Ukraine in recent months are effective enough.
Some warn that it is too early to call Ukraine's rapid progress in recent days a turning point in the war, warning that Russia is far from a military spent force.
