Italian politician Giorgia Meloni, who should become the new prime minister, promised her full support for Kyiv after receiving congratulations from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his election victory.
The far-right Brothers of Italy party, led by Meloni, won 26 percent of the vote in the election, and its right-wing coalition has a convincing majority in parliament, the final election results announced on Tuesday showed. As Hina reports, Zelenski said on Twitter that he was looking forward to "fruitful cooperation" with the new Italian government.
Meloni replied that she could count on their "loyal support for the freedom of the Ukrainian people".
"Stay strong and keep your faith steadfast," Meloni said.
She was one of the few Italian political leaders who wholeheartedly supported outgoing Prime Minister Mario Draghi's decision to supply arms to Ukraine, even though she was in opposition to his government.
