Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservative Committee, confirmed that former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak (42) will become the new leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of Great Britain.
Sunak was the only nominee, after former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Parliamentary Relations Minister Penny Mordent dropped out of the race for party leader.
Sunak will take over from Liz Trass. The BBC reports that he is expected to officially become prime minister on Tuesday, that is, while the procedures are completed, it is uncertain that it will happen as early as today.
After the departure of Liz Trass, the conservative party announced a shortened procedure for electing a new party leader, who automatically becomes the prime minister, requiring that each candidate have the support of 100 colleagues in the parliament out of a total of 375 conservative deputies. This left the possibility for only three candidates. It was also determined that a new party leader must be elected by Friday.
It was announced that he will address the MPs at 14.30:15.30 p.m. local time, or XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. CET.
Sunak will become the first British Prime Minister of Asian descent and the third person to head the government in less than three months.
