If a referendum on Britain's withdrawal from the European Union were to be held today, 52 percent of the British people would choose to remain in that bloc.
This is shown by the results of the latest survey, which was conducted on the day British Prime Minister Theresa May gave a speech on the relations between the country and the Union after Brexit.
The poll was conducted yesterday by the British "Independent" and the BMG Research institute, ahead of the start of Prime Minister May's speech in Florence.
"The results of the survey show that the majority of Britons now believe that the country should remain in the EU, after the weeks-long deadlock in negotiations with Brussels and the divisions in the British government brought to light all the complexities of exit," the London newspaper said.
The latest public opinion survey, conducted among more than 1.400 British adults, shows that 52 percent of respondents support the country remaining in the Union, while 48 percent of them are in favor of leaving the bloc.
"The Independent" states that the number of Britons who are still in favor of remaining in the EU has increased, because two months ago, according to a survey conducted at the time, 50 percent of respondents were in favor of remaining, and the same percentage was in favor of withdrawing from the EU.
The French "Express" assesses that months of complex and unsuccessful negotiations have shaken the British people and made them wonder if they might not have made a mistake when they voted to leave the EU in the referendum last June.
