The head of German diplomacy, Analena Berbock, paid a surprise visit to Kharkiv, in the northeast of Ukraine, today, and it is the first visit by a high-ranking official of a Western country to that city near the Russian border, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced.
Sergiy Cherevatii, the spokesman of the Eastern Military Command of Ukraine, announced that during the last 24 hours, Russian troops shelled Soledar and its suburbs 86 times, Ukrainian news site Ukrainska Pravda reported.
Cherevatiji added that although Russian troops are "suffering colossal losses", they are still trying to capture Soledar.
Soledar has long been the target of a Russian offensive, with Cherevatii previously saying the town was "practically destroyed".
According to the latest report from the UK Ministry of Defence, Russian forces along with the Wagner Group have made a tactical advance into Soledar and are likely to control most of the settlement.
The mining town of Soledar is just 10 kilometers northeast of Bakhmut and is a key stronghold for Ukraine's efforts to defend the town, which is among Russia's most valuable targets. By capturing Soledar and Bakhmut, Russia is trying to achieve its goal of capturing the entire Donetsk region.

Secretary of the Security Council of Russia Nikolai Patrushev said that Moscow is fighting NATO in Ukraine and that the West is trying to break Russia.
"The events in Ukraine are not a conflict between Moscow and Kiev. It is a military confrontation between Russia and NATO, above all the United States of America and Great Britain," said Patrushev.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that he is still convinced of the need to coordinate the delivery of weapons to Ukraine with allies, while pressure is growing on Berlin to send German "Leopard 2" tanks to Kiev.
Germany announced last Sunday that it would provide Ukraine with Marder armored vehicles to help repel Russian forces.
The announcement came on the same day that the US announced that it would send Bradley fighting vehicles to Ukraine, a day after a similar announcement from France.
Scholz, who has often stressed the importance of not escalating the conflict in Ukraine or giving Russia a reason to consider the West a party to the war, said Western allies had long "prepared, discussed and organized this," Reuters reports.
Kiev also asked for heavy vehicles such as Leopard tanks, which would represent a significant step in the West's support for Ukraine, the agency said.

Ukrainian military reports said their troops were repelling fierce attacks by Russian forces redeployed to the town of Soledar after failing to capture the nearby town of Bakhmut.
Zelensky did not specify what he meant by gaining time and strength, but Ukrainian officials and officers have warned that Russia is planning a new major offensive in the coming months, according to VOA.
The town of Soledar, in the industrial region of Donbas, is located a few kilometers from Bakhmut, where Ukrainian and Russian forces are suffering heavy losses in intense clashes.
