The surveillance system of the Romanian Air Force detected an aircraft resembling a meteorological balloon in Romanian airspace, the Ministry of Defense announced today.
The announcement states that ten minutes after the discovery of the aircraft at an altitude of 11.000 meters, the Air Force sent two MiG 21 planes, but they failed to confirm the presence of the object, reports Reuters.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense said the aircrews remained in the area for 30 minutes and returned to base after having neither visual nor radar confirmation of the target.
Moldova, which borders Romania and Ukraine, briefly closed its airspace today for undisclosed security reasons.
