The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for foreign policy and security, Josep Borelj, called on the bloc to immediately provide weapons and training to the Ukrainian army, stating that a new Russian offensive had begun.
As Anatolia reports, Borelj spoke at the debate dedicated to the first anniversary of the war in Ukraine, at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
On Tuesday, he participated in the meeting of the Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine in Brussels, where the head of the Ukrainian Defense Oleksiy Reznykov informed the defense ministers of NATO member countries about the situation and asked for additional support.
Borelj told the European parliamentarians that the reality on the ground is currently extremely worrying and that "this spring and the coming summer will be decisive in the war".
"The Russian counter-offensive has begun, albeit on a small scale, with the deployment of more than 360 Russian soldiers, twice as many as at the beginning, while Ukraine has fewer soldiers on the ground for the first time. More ammunition and more training is needed for Ukrainian troops," he said. is Borelj.
He called on the bloc to increase military aid to Kyiv, because, as he said, this is the way to achieve peace.
Since the start of Russia's war against Ukraine, the EU and its member states have provided 50 billion euros in direct support to Ukraine, including more than 12 billion in military aid.
