Spain's parliament has passed a law allowing women who suffer from severe pain during their menstrual cycle to receive paid sick leave during that period.
The law received the support of 185 deputies, while 154 were against it, France 24 reports.
As reported by N1, sick leave due to menstruation is approved in only a few countries in the world, among which are Japan, Indonesia and Zambia, and Spain is the first among European countries.
This is a historic day for the progress of feminism, wrote on Twitter the Minister for Equality Irene Montero.
The law stipulates that employees who suffer from severe pain during the menstrual cycle can take sick leave as long as they need, and the state will pay for it, not the employer.
According to the Spanish Gynecological Association, a third of women suffer from serious pain during the menstrual cycle.
