About 2.000 demonstrators gathered tonight in Thessaloniki in northern Greece to protest the omissions that led to a serious train accident in which 57 people were killed and more are still missing, the police said.
Demonstrators threw stones and Molotov cocktails, but the situation quickly calmed down, said the police captain.
Today, demonstrations were also held in front of the building of the Hellenic Treijn railway company in Athens. Demonstrators held a minute of silence for the victims of the train collision.
An Athens-Thessalonica passenger train carrying more than 350 passengers collided with a freight train in central Greece at midnight on Tuesday as they were traveling at full speed on the same track.
The Greek Railways Association suspended train and metro services in Athens today, striking over long-standing financial neglect of the railways, which they say was the cause of Tuesday's train collision.
The investigation has just begun, and Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis resigned on Wednesday over moral responsibility for the accident, which he admitted was the fault of the recently appointed, inexperienced head of the Larissa train station in central Greece, who mistakenly directed trains onto the same double-track track. He was arrested and charged with negligent homicide and negligent grievous bodily harm.
