The Russians are currently only a little more than a kilometer from the center of Bakhmut, the head of the Wagner paramilitary group Yevgeny Prigozhin said today, referring to the eastern Ukrainian town that Russian troops have been trying to capture since the summer.

"You can see the building of the city administration, the administrative center of the city," said Prigozhin, pointing his finger at the Russian positions and added that it was about a kilometer and two hundred meters away, his Konkord press service reported.

He said that the fighting is ongoing. According to France Presse, his words could not be immediately verified by independent sources.

"The most important thing is to get a good amount of weapons and make progress," said Prigozhin, who is in open conflict with the Russian military hierarchy, particularly over getting more ammunition, which he said is necessary to continue the attack on Bakhmut.

Prigogine's men are in the front line in the battle for Bahmut in which both sides have suffered heavy losses.

In recent weeks, the Russians have been trying to surround that city and have succeeded in cutting off several important supply routes for Ukrainian soldiers.

Although observers doubt the strategic importance of Bakhmut, the fight itself, the longest for one city since the beginning of the Russian offensive more than a year ago, has symbolic significance for both Kyiv and Moscow, which wants to mark a victory after several defeats.

Three civilians were killed in Russian shelling of Kherson in southern Ukraine, while one person was killed in the eastern Donetsk region, regional officials said, as reported by Reuters.

Regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin said three people, including an elderly woman, were wounded during artillery shelling of the city.

Ukraine recaptured Kherson in November after nearly eight months of occupation by Russian forces.
