A foreign citizen was arrested in Poland on suspicion of spying for Russia

Poland announced today that a foreign national suspected of spying for Russia will be detained for three months until the investigation is completed.

Polish military prosecutors said the foreign national, whose identity has not been released, admitted to passing sensitive information to Russian intelligence.

The suspect arrived in Poland in January and has since been collecting information on key infrastructure and security procedures in the north of the country, where gas terminals and major ports are located.

The court granted the prosecution's request that the suspect be detained for three months to help investigators. A foreign citizen faces up to 10 years in prison if found guilty. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24 last year, Poland began to support Kiev. Since then, several suspects of spying for Moscow have been arrested.

Earlier this month, Polish authorities arrested nine people suspected of being members of a Russian spy ring that was preparing acts of sabotage. A Spanish journalist who also holds a Russian passport has been detained for more than a year on espionage charges.
