Investigation into possible terrorist attacks in Belgium: Seven people detained

Seven people, five of whom are Belgian citizens, one Turkish and one Bulgarian, were detained today as part of investigations into possible terrorist attacks, the Belgian prosecutor's office announced.

Those seven persons were detained last night as part of the action against extremist activity aimed at radicalizing young people.

Most of those detained are around twenty years old.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office announced yesterday that eight people were detained, and one of the suspects was released.

Those persons were detained as part of two ongoing investigations in Brussels and Antwerp, two cases related to the planning of the attack, which were related to each other, the prosecution stated.

So far, it has not been determined what the potential targets of those terrorist plans were.

Today, detention was ordered for four people in the investigation conducted in Antwerp, three Belgians and one Turkish.

All four people were accused of "participating in the activities of a terrorist group", "preparing a terrorist act", "spreading a message with the intention of inciting a terrorist act" and "attempted murder in a terrorist context", the prosecution stated.

In the case in Brussels, detention was ordered for three more suspects, two Belgians and one Bulgarian.

They are accused of "participating in the activities of a terrorist group", "preparing a terrorist act" and "spreading a message with the intention of inciting to carry out a terrorist act".

In the investigation in Brussels, three suspects were arrested in two municipalities in the Belgian capital, Molenbeek and Scherbeek, and in Zaventem, near Brussels.
