During the weekend, visitors will taste frog drumsticks at the traditional fair in Vitel in the east of France, to the general dismay of associations that condemn the attack on biodiversity and warn of animal suffering.
"Up to 350.000 frogs were caught for that fair, especially in Indonesia and Turkey, where the population of frogs is already in an alarming decline," said an unnamed representative of the French non-governmental organization "Robin Hood".
The German organization Pro Wildlife condemned the method of killing frogs, stating that they are still alive when their drumsticks are removed.
"In the European Union, such looting of biodiversity together with such cruel killing methods should not be allowed. Such imports should be stopped," both associations said in a joint statement.
On the other hand, a representative of the French Frog Drum Tasting Brotherhood defended the fair as a "unique event" in the country that attracts several thousand visitors.
"The fair has existed for almost 50 years, and it is not the first time that we eat frogs that are not from France, due to the fact that there are very few farms and they do not have large productions," said Daniel Gilles.
Reacting to the method of killing frogs and abusing animals, he said that if he wanted to eat a rabbit, chicken or duck, those animals had to go through the blade of a knife.
