The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, canceled today's election campaign activities in order to rest for the day after he fell ill during a television interview, allegedly due to stomach problems.
During Erdogan's interview with two Turkish television stations last night, the program was abruptly interrupted and resumed 20 minutes later, when the 69-year-old Turkish leader said he had a "serious stomach virus" and apologized for the interruption.
Erdogan, who was supposed to give speeches in three cities today, announced on Twitter that he will be resting at home on the advice of a doctor and that he will be replaced by Turkey's Vice President Fuat Oktay. He added that he will continue his activities tomorrow.
Ahead of the uncertain presidential and parliamentary elections on May 14, in which he is running for a third term, Erdogan is campaigning hard, making at least three public appearances a day.
The upcoming presidential elections are the most serious test for Erdogan in the last 20 years, which he has spent as prime minister and president, and polls give a slight advantage to opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
