Until recently and probably the next prime minister of Greece, the conservative Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the favorite in the upcoming parliamentary elections with his New Democracy party, announced today that he is suspending the election campaign after he tested positive for covid-19.
"I'm sure I'll have to stay home for a few days because of this," Mitsotakis said on social media.
"Hugs and kisses are always great fun, but sometimes there's a price to pay," he added of his suspected infection during public appearances.
The XNUMX-year-old former prime minister, who was vaccinated, was supposed to travel to Mount Athos this weekend, which is connected with the fact that a new pro-church party could take away some of the faithful's votes.
Polls published this week put New Democracy about 20 percentage points ahead of rival leftist Syriza.
In parliamentary elections on May 21, New Democracy defeated Syriza by a 20 percent margin (40:20), but was five seats short of an absolute majority in the 300-seat parliament.
The previous prime minister, Mitsotakis, immediately refused the mandate to form a coalition government and called for new elections to be held on June 25, and the president of the highest commercial court, the Court of Settlements, Ioannis Sarmas, was appointed as the interim prime minister.
