Sweden has fulfilled its obligations towards Turkey, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said today after a two-hour meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Turkey has been blocking Sweden's entry into NATO for 13 months, accusing it of leniency towards Kurdish activists living on its territory.
Stoltenberg expressed hope that Turkey will approve Sweden's entry into NATO before the summit of the heads of state of the Alliance member states on June 11 and 12 in Vilnius.
The head of NATO thanked Turkey for responding to the request to send reinforcements to the north of Kosovo.
The Turkish Defense Ministry said on Saturday that it plans to send its forces to Kosovo on Sunday and Monday in response to NATO's request to join the KFOR peacekeeping force after unrest in northern Kosovo.
On Saturday, Stoltenberg attended the inauguration of Erdogan, who began his third presidential term, which will last five years.
On the other hand, the high representative of the European Union for foreign policy and security, Josep Borelj, congratulated Hakan Fidan on his Twitter post as the head of Turkish diplomacy.
Erdogan announced new names in the government after the inauguration. Fidan will replace Mevlut Cavusoglu. Fidan is believed to be loyal to Erdogan and served as his diplomatic adviser for three years.
