Two female environmental activists smeared red paint on the protective glass of a Claude Monet painting at Stockholm's national museum before taping their hands to the painting, police said.

"Women aged around 25 and 30 were arrested," the police said.

The organization Aterstall Watmarker (Reclaim the Wetlands) took responsibility for this action.

It is Monet's work "Artist's Garden in Giverny" from 1900.

The museum said in a statement that the museum's conservation team is examining the painting to see if it has been damaged.

The organization Aterstall Watmarker published a video showing two female activists - a nurse and a student - painting the glass behind the work with red paint while simultaneously shouting "the climate situation is urgent" and "our health is at risk".

In a conversation with France Press, the representatives of the organization accused the Swedish government of not respecting the international obligations regarding environmental policy.

"We are supposed to reduce our emissions by 31 percent and instead our emissions continue to rise. It is scandalous," said the group's spokeswoman Helen Walgren.
