British Foreign Minister James Cleverley said today in London that the rebellion of the Russian mercenary formation Wagner led by Yevgeny Prigozhin represents an "unprecedented challenge" to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"The Russian government's lies have been exposed by one of President Putin's henchmen. Prigozhin's rebellion is an unprecedented challenge to President Putin's rule, and it is clear that cracks are opening in Russia's support for the war (in Ukraine)," Cleverly said, according to CNN.
In a speech to the House of Commons, Cleverley said his country's government considered the incident "an internal Russian matter".
"And, of course, the leadership of Russia is exclusively a matter for the Russian people. But everyone should keep in mind that one of Putin's protégés has publicly destroyed his arguments for the war in Ukraine," he added.
