Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticized NATO, saying it is "absurd" that no time frame has been set for inviting Ukraine to join the military alliance, the BBC reports.
"It is unprecedented and absurd when no time frame has been set for either the invitation or the membership of Ukraine," he wrote in a harsh statement on Twitter.
He added that there seems to be no readiness either to invite Ukraine to NATO or to become a member of the alliance.
NATO agreed in 2008 that Ukraine would "become" a member, but the alliance did not say how and when that might happen.
"Now, on the way to Vilnius, we received signals that certain formulations are being discussed without Ukraine," adds Zelensky.
He points out that this wording is about "an invitation to become a member of NATO, not Ukraine's membership".
"Uncertainty is weakness. And I will talk about it openly at the summit," he says.
The summit at the level of leaders of NATO member states began this morning in Vilnius, Lithuania, and the main topics are Sweden's admission to the Alliance and Ukraine's efforts to become a member.
