Greek firefighters were still fighting fires on Rhodes today, while the island's port authority evacuated residents and tourists from the beaches of Lardos and Kiotari by sea.
Athens Radio SKAI reports that the eastern side of the island has been cut off by a large forest fire, and that road traffic has been suspended.
The fire engulfed three hotels in the Kiotari area of southern Rhodes that were vacated by tourists earlier today.
As N1 reports, the fire on Rhodes has been burning for five days and is now out of control.
Four coast guard boats are involved in the evacuation, and one private plane is on standby.
The representative of the Hellenic Fire Service, Janis Artopios, told reporters that the fire in Rhodes is the most difficult that the firefighters are currently facing.
As he stated, 173 firefighters, ten groups of volunteers, 35 vehicles, five helicopters, three airplanes, as well as 31 firefighters from Slovakia with five fire trucks were involved in extinguishing the fire on that island.
